Where Innovation Is Tradition

President Merten’s Letter to the Mason Community

March 23, 2011

I have informed Dr. Volgenau that I will be stepping down as president of George Mason University on June 30, 2012.  Serving as president of Mason has been the greatest privilege of my career and I am proud of what has been accomplished.

Sally and I have thoroughly enjoyed our tenure at Mason and value the friendships and community ties we have established.  We look forward to continuing a strong relationship with the university for many years.

Many people have made a difference in our lives and the successes that Mason has enjoyed.  Over the coming months, we will have many opportunities to thank you collectively and individually.  At this time, I would like to especially thank Peter Stearns, Morrie Scherrens, Tom Hennessey, Sharon Cullen, Ernst Volgenau and Jim and Liz Larranaga.

Several months ago Sally and I faced the reality that all good things eventually come to an end.  We know this transition is, at times, going to be challenging for us and the Mason community.  We are confident that Mason’s mission and objectives will be paramount as the university and we move forward.

We appreciate your help and encouragement during this emotional time for ourselves and others.
